Costa Rica - Dominical or Matapalo/Pavones/Drake? - 2008/07/17 21:15 Hey everyone,

I'm taking myself off to Costa Rica in September for a couple of weeks. Lucky me! I'm planning on heading to Dominical, as Tamarindo looks a nightmare these days and I want to go somewhere that is unspoilt but with good waves (for someone who has surfed on and (mostly) off for the last 5 years or so). Dominical seems to fit the bill but I'm worried it might be heading the same way as Tamarindo. Further south, at Drakes bay and then Matapalo and Pavones all sound beautiful but I don't know much about the conditions/variety/vibe or whether I can get some lessons down there.

Do I stick with Dominical with its good waves and risk hanging out in a place that has become a bit spoiled, or head further south for a quieter, more Costa Rican experience but run the risk of not scoring the waves and lessons to fit my (very intermediate) standard?

All advice very gratefully received!

Re:Costa Rica - Dominical or Matapalo/Pavones/Drake? - 2008/07/18 02:07 Wizard,
Dominical is a good spot if you like heavy beachbreaks, and a lot of closeouts. But it is a quiet little town, and it just depends on the swell size. Dominical is a wave magnet and always has something. I stayed there for a few weeks in August and it was double to triple overhead grinding beach break, its similar to Hermosa. If you plan on staying there you should bring a few boards and check the surf forecast before you go, because if its big you might break a board or two. Pavonnes is a great wave, and when the swell is pumping I would head there or to anything with a reef or a point, or something with a channel. You dont want to spend your whole trip dropping into closeouts, and duck diving. So spend a few days in Dominical and pull into a few barrels, knock the rust off and then go find yourself a classy wave. You should be surfing more than one area anywayz, it'll be fun and you might meet some cool people who might turn you on to some less crowded waves. Pavonnes is a world class left, probably one of the best waves in Costa and it would be a sin not to at least charge it for a few days. If you can surf you'll catch plenty of waves, The wave is so long that when the the surfer who takes off furthest up the point eats it, you can drop in and still get a great ride. Pura Vida!!!!!!!!!

Re:Costa Rica - Dominical or Matapalo/Pavones/Drake? - 2008/07/19 02:15 In September you should catch some tasty waves anywhere on the Pacific side. I have yet to surf Pavones myself, I prefer the NW Pacific side of Costa Rica, but I plan to surf it soon.

Crowds should not be bad in September.

Enjoy!

Re:Costa Rica - Dominical or Matapalo/Pavones/Drake? - 2008/07/21 19:06 Thanks Guys. Reckon I'll start out in Domi and then see what's going on further South.

Pura vida!

Re:Costa Rica - Dominical or Matapalo/Pavones/Drake? - 2008/07/25 06:44 I agree with Kewalos on Dominical on all counts. I've had some great rides there but also had my ass handed to me. you will always find waves in dominical when nowhere else in costa is breaking. its been a few years since i was in dominical but there were no lessons being taught when i was around.

Tamarindo beach break is very crowded and fickle--however, if you're an intermediate surfer, the witches rock surf camp will treat you right. you can catch the early morn boat ride to avellanas or playa negra where you will be surfing great breaks with no crowds at high tide and the guys that teach there are killer surfers and extremely cool
