South Irvine OC - 2008/07/17 12:34My wife and I will be moving to Irvine in about two weeks. We will be there for about 4 months. There are so many breaks I am leaning towards salt creek for afternoon trips and possibly tressels/san O. Any advice for the locations on ways to beat the crowd without having to dawn patrol? What about later afternoon? Any decent spots around Laguna worth checking out? I will mostly be surfing my 9'2 performance longboard and 7'6 on the bigger days. I am from the Gulf Coast, Thank you for any info.

Re:South Irvine OC - 2008/07/18 06:25You don't surf in the afternoons in SOCAL in July ... strictly dawn patrol! Strong onshore junk until at least September when you start to get some offshore Santa Anna's. Forget Salt Creek, no access, no parking and heavy shortboard local vibe. Don't try to sneak in by following someone in the gate like I did ... broke the bloody thing ... you had better know some richey, riches who lives in the community. San O is about it for a longboard unless you want to hike a couple of miles into Trestles from the Burger King parking lot?
You could try the dawn patrol at Blackies, Newport Beach during the week but just forget about it on weekends or holidays.
Typical small Blackies ... easy left and right hand peaks but beware on a big south swell it can get narly.
