Maldives Surf/Stay Questions! - 2008/06/20 07:46 Some questions about the Maldives.

2 of us are planning on flying in from India in early summer of 2009. Hopefully going to spend a few days exploring Mele before heading to a resort/charter. After that, we'll probably fly out to Bangkok.

So the questions:

Mele:
- Are there any budget lodgings within walking distance of the central market and fish market?
- Is there anything that we should not miss while in Mele?

Resorts:
- Can anyone recommend a good resort that is not too expensive and has good surf? I've seen a few online, but I'd like personal recommendations.
- Are there any places we should avoid?
- Are there any surf resorts with lagoon cabins (over the water, swim-in/swim-out deck, etc.) that can be rented for a few nights of splurging? (yes, I know this will be expensive)
- Expensive resort recommendations are welcome if you think it's worth the money for the treatment you get.

Charters:
- Can anyone recommend a good budget surf/snorkel charter boat? Safe for women, good at getting surf, maybe also one that stops for beach visits, snorkling, and/or fishing?
- Has anyone heard of Tropical Cruises? They offer a pretty good good deal cost-wise, but I've read some bad reviews; stuff like the boat's battery being dead each morning and not being able to get underway to get to the surf. The person also complained about bugs, but that's not a big issue for us.

Re:Maldives Surf/Stay Questions! - 2008/09/02 13:57 Hey Marcus,

I surfed the Maldives in 2006 with World Safaris http://www.worldsurfaris.com/surf-travel/surf-trips/Maldives-Male-Central-Atolls/ they were excellent. You stay on the boat which is definitely the best option if you're serious about getting waves. Staying on the boat is good because you can try different spots if the conditions aren't right or the crowds at one break are too large. Before I went on the boat I spent a day on Male and no disrespect to the place but you won't need a few days to see it. If you want to stay at a resort try Chaaya Island http://www.atolltravel.com/default.htm?http://www.atolltravel.com/Maldives/MaldivesDhonveli.htm which has its own exclusive surf break (Pasta Point), only guests of the resort can use it which means less crowds.
