Where to surf in Australia? - 2008/04/27 22:14Hi, I'm moving to Australia in Jan '09 for about six months. I have no idea what part of Australia I'm heading to yet and I'm looking for some advice.
I would love to move somewhere where I won't always need to wear a wetsuit when surfing and somewhere that will suit someone who has been surfing for two years.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah

Re:Where to surf in Australia? - 2008/04/28 05:54Hi Sara as an ex pat Gold Coast local ... its the ONLY place to go. Lots of jobs in the tourist industry with an international airport ... think a combo of Miami (weather) Vegas (gambling) Newport Beach with Malibu thrown in(location). You can surf where I learned Coolangatta Beach: www.geocities.com/dr_c123/surf.html

Re:Where to surf in Australia? - 2008/04/28 23:50Agree with DrC123. One thing in addition: Perhaps I would add the Sunshine + Tweed Coast to the schedule. Both provide secure sandy beaches not to difficult to surf.

Re:Where to surf in Australia? - 2008/04/29 06:06Hey Sarah! I've never been to Australia, but one of my best friends moved to the south coast last summer. He's constantly telling me about this one place called Esperance. It's one of the world's best-kept surfing secrets. The ocean is filled with hundreds of islands and reefs. For an adventure, try to find Cyclops - hailed as the most hyped and least surfed wave in the world. I hope you catch some awesome waves! Make sure you post pictures!

Re:Where to surf in Australia? - 2008/04/29 12:09Dude are you nuts Esperance is a small fishing town located in the middle of nowhere with a population of less than 10,000 people in Western Australia, on the south coast around half-way between Albany and the South Australian border! It is also a breeding ground for Great Whites!

Re:Where to surf in Australia? - 2008/04/29 19:42Thanks for all of the advice. Such a big decision to be made. I guess there's nothing stopping me arriving over there and moving on if I don't like where I orignally land.
I have somewhere to stay in Melbourne but I get the feeling that the house is in the middle of nowhere.
It takes an hour and a half to drive to the beach where I live at the moment. So I would love to live pretty close to the beach when I end upp in Australia.
