gold coast australia: info please - 2008/03/11 07:13 I'm planning on studying abroad in on the gold coast of australia from feb - june of 2009. My options are griffith and bond universities. I dont care about the schools as much as i do the breaks and access to them. I have about a month's worth of surfing on a shortboard but have surfed rincon puerto rico for a week straight and will be living at the beach on the east coast of the usa (new jersey). If anyone has info on breaks close to griffith or bond (access, types of breaks, crowd, anything important) or how close to the uni the breaks are/bus options that would be great. And dont think that since i am just beginning im not up for some of the better breaks, i am a fast learner (have surfed jobos in pr at around 8 feet-i do know that aus gets pretty heavy though) and have done the tourist surfing thing for the last 5 years or so as i live 2 hours from the coast and work at home. thanks

Re:gold coast australia: info please - 2008/03/11 14:23 Oz is just like anywhere else if your good pull some airs or tail slides and you will earn respect if not get to know the locals or go surf the upcoast beach breaks. Check out:

Re:gold coast australia: info please - 2008/03/14 23:06 As our australian members seem to maintain a low profile, I`ll try to help out a bit: Griffith uni is located at Brisbane far away from surfable beaches compared to bond uni, which is located just a couple of minutes away from worldclass breaks.
I do not have the faintest idea what uni is better, but bond is located by far better.

Re:gold coast australia: info please - 2008/03/18 03:26 thanks a lot. any idea of accessibility to these breaks from the uni?

Re:gold coast australia: info please - 2008/03/18 20:05 Bond university is 2-10 kms away from several spots all along the beach from Sufers Hell (also known as Surfers Paradise) to Burleigh Heads. You may go by bus, bicycle or even walk down.
Check Surf Atlas:

Stay stoked!

Re:gold coast australia: info please - 2008/04/09 03:23 hey there,

my girl studied at bond. it's a fucking 'rich-kids' uni, go to griffith and get a flat down at the beach to surf the beach it you're into beachbreaks (i'm not!). (surfers or broadbeach)
it's further away from the points, but you will need a car anyway...

if you're more into the cruisy livestyle and pointbreaks try the coast down south (burleigh, currumbin etc.)

We lived in rainbow bay (superbank, snapper, d-bah), but it's a 20min drive to bond and 40 min. to griffith.
we never went to surfers, because it's a shitty town full of backpackers on the piss. you don't wanna surf beachbreaks at the goldy.
I'm surfing for 13 years now, and even if you throw tails, bust airs and get good tubes don't expect the locals to welcome you!!! I ate shit for about one month, it got better after i made some friends that were locals. i went out with them every day and after a while even the worst locals knew my face, but the kept dropping in even when i was locked in the tube.
try whisteling in the tube, pulling the legrope... just cheeky stuff. don't get aggro, there is always a guy in the lineup whos more aggro (and stronger) than you.

be prepared for pros everywhere, packed points, crazy crowds at the points, drop ins, school classes that surf, stingers, ultra high skin-cancer risk, nippers, mad tradies at the afternoon...and PERFECT EPIC WAVES,CONCISTENCY, THE LONGEST RIGHTS, WARM WATER, TROPICAL SURROUNDING...

cheers,
