Surf trip to Victoria and NSW in May 2008 - 2008/02/25 07:49 Hi, I just found this site and have read some reviews of waves and postings. Some real decent surf spot reviews, but also some very immature drivel on postings. Nevertheless, I tought Id post some travel questions, and hopefully get some informative feedback. Ive never been to australia, and am planning a surf trip for may, 2008 for about 5 weeks. Im traveling solo, and on a fairly tight budget. Im thinking of either renting or buying a small minivan in melbourne, and then making my way NE through Victoria and NSW. Ive been surfing for approximately 22 years, and am very competent in most surf conditions.
Some questions?
1) is it more economical to rent or buy and sell the vehicle Ill be traveling in.
2) Are there campgounds in close proximity to good surfing spots along this route?
3) Are hostels plentiful and economical in this part of the country?
4) what kinds of swell patterns, water temps, and weather can be expected this time of year in this region.
5) Are restaraunts and diners economical or is it best to cook for oneself?
6) what is the price of gasoline currently?

Any legitimate feedback would be much appreciated, thank you. John

Re:Surf trip to Victoria and NSW in May 2008 - 2008/02/26 03:05 To 1) For five weeks it may be better to rent a camper, because You don't waste time with buying and selling. Look at http://www.wickedcampers.com.au or google "campervan australia"

To 2) There are lots of camps and caravan parks along the coast, often nearby surfspots, in various categories.
http://www.goseeaustralia.com.au/caravanparkspage.asp

To 3+4) Don't know.

To 5) For a small wallet, it's better to use the kitchen in the camper, even though You might find good food for small money from time to time.

To 6) 5$US per Gallon (1.3$US per Liter) Unleaded, for Diesel around 10 Cent more.

ive seen alot of those wicked campers along the coast, seem ok, think theyre reasonably priced

refer to tourism websites for each state for a list of caravan parks as we call them, in coastal towns most will be in close proximity if not backing onto the beach
3) Are hostels plentiful and economical in this part of the country?
You'll find hostels more around the cities, but i know there is one down at Lorne, past torquay in Victoria
4) what kinds of swell patterns, water temps, and weather can be expected this time of year in this region.
being in a drought, the weather shouldnt be too bad for winter, decent swells come pretty reqularly and youll need a full suit & booties, especially in Vic
5) Are restaraunts and diners economical or is it best to cook for oneself?
mix it up a bit.. cook a bit to cut costs but every coastal town will have take away food and pub food is hearty, big and good quality. gotta have a "parma and a pot" at the pub!
6) what is the price of gasoline currently?
its fluctuating around $1.40Aus per litre
