Where to Live and Surf in South America - 2008/01/30 02:50 To anyone who knows anything about surfing in South America,

I'm planning on going to South America this fall for about half a year to study Spanish, but I would also like to surf a lot. Like everyday if I can. I don't really know where to go. I would like to live in a really cool place that has good surf right there or nearby. I'm only a beginner surfer so I don't need to find huge waves at all, I just want to find a place that consistently gets decent waves. I'm planning on doing one of those month long courses where you study Spanish in the mornings and do whatever you want in the afternoons, and I think there are quite a few of them around the continent but probably not everywhere. So I would probably have to be somewhere that is a decent sized city. So anyways if anyone knows of a place with: waves, cool people, good nightlife, nice beaches, etc. I would love to hear from you. By the way it can't be in Brazil because of the Spanish thing......but you already knew that.

Cheers,

Trevor

Re:Where to Live and Surf in South America - 2008/01/30 21:19 Lima, Peru... you can live in Barranco or miraflores and surf right there... Water quality is an issue in Lima - but then 35km south you have lots of quality breaks...

Re:Where to Live and Surf in South America - 2008/02/06 08:45 Yep, Lima, Peru would be a good choice. There are hundreds of language schools in town. You can surf in the Costa Verde in town during the week (mostly smaller waves, but it depends) and you can head down to the south about 35-45km for weekend surfing. Easy access to rental cars or station wagon taxis.

Re:Where to Live and Surf in South America - 2008/02/09 12:34 I have done quite a bit of research on Lima and everything looks great except the water quality around the city of Lima and most of the year cold water.

Nightlife looks awesome including lots of other things to do besides surfing.

Lima is worth a very close look.

Argentina is also worth a look with major, safe cities on the coast but again cold water.

Re:Where to Live and Surf in South America - 2008/02/09 21:45 Yeah, Lima has cool/cold water. From Jan-April you can surf w/o a wet suit. You will need at least a shorty during May, Nov-Dec. And a full suit w/ booties in June-Sept.

Re:Where to Live and Surf in South America - 2008/02/10 02:50 Good stuff splaktar.

What are the water temps in January?

I am guessing in the low 70's is that about right?
