Bells when its small - ok for novice? - 2007/12/05 11:40 Hi all,

I'm at a pretty basic surf skill level and wouldn't even consider surfing Bells (as in Australia, Victoria) on one of its 'regular' days as I know it can be tricky (ie. rips, undertows and getting in the way of good surfers). But at the moment it seems to be around the 4ft and when I was there a few weeks ago there was only a handful of people.

So is Bells still only for "experienced" surfers when it's small?

Cheers,
Dan.

Re:Bells when its small - ok for novice? - 2007/12/25 20:23 How are you on point breaks? Can you use rips well? navigate your way around reef? Itd just depend on your actual skill level.
From what I saw over the weekend its no spot for a learner.
Theres plenty on other great spots around that area that are a safer alternative.
Addis looked great last weekend and even Roadnight was being lovely!
Youl get there, no rush. Enjoy every wave and stay safe

Re:Bells when its small - ok for novice? - 2008/01/02 06:53 Hi Joansy,

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, I'm probably too novice for it yet, but when I saw it a month or two ago it seemed quite sedate when small. You're right though, there is no rush. These mythical places have a way of seducing you though

Cheers,
Dan.

Re:Bells when its small - ok for novice? - 2008/01/03 06:11 it is sedate when its small, i remmember surfing it at 1.5 ft and i found it fine. it was the first reef point i had ever surfed and was a good starter. i was a more intermediate then novice though at the time. you just have to weigh it up, is it too dangerous or is it a good healhty challenge that will grow my surfing. also about wave size 4 ft is overhead by the way, maybe you meant 2 ft. be careful about rips and they work to your advantage.

Re:Bells when its small - ok for novice? - 2008/01/07 06:02 if your looking for a more cruisy point/reef break in the area, check out point impossible or "possos" as it gets called. a lot gentler, and gets good when the bells area is too big. ridden by longboarders so its a lot mellower than further down the coast..
