Bali Help!!!!! - 2007/08/15 07:16I'm starting to freak out, I'll be in Bali in three weeks. Shit, how, what, when, where. All i have done is sit here and go through looking at the photos of surf that "i might be" surfing. I say might be because i have no idea what to expect when i get there, this is a dream come true for me, a lifelong ambition, but now it is upon me i am on the verge of a nervous break down. Its not the surf itself that is freaking me out, i have been surfing for 15 years and have surfed some really heavy breaks in my time, the problem is how the hell am i going to get to any of these amazing breaks, OK I'll be Kuta so that one pretty much takes care of its self, but what about all the ones which aren't going to be in walking distance, I'm on a budget so i can't afford to hire a car, i can't imagine that there is a regular bus service(that's a joke by the way), what the hell do i do surely i am not the only one who can't afford transport, i really need some advice. Secondly, OK lets say i have had some great advice and am now sleeping at night because i know how i am supposed to travel to the breaks, what do i do when i get there do i paddle across the reef? I'm sure i have heard that you can pay a local in a boat to take you to the line up and if that's true are they just sat around waiting for surfers to rock up and ask for a lift or is there a number? and then what? do they hang around whilst i surf for a couple of hours or until i want to go back in. Look this is all a bit tongue in cheek i know, but i think that i have some valid questions and i am a little worried about how things are done there, so if any one does have any, info, tips, advice on anything i am concerned about or more it would be greatly received and much appreciated.
Many thanks, Hawks

Re:Bali Help!!!!! - 2007/08/15 16:30Hey mate if you are stayin in Kuta then it is easy as to get to some of the breaks. Just walk down to kuta beach and head to the southern end of the beach. You will see the boats buzzing around dropping surfers off. They drop the surfers off out the front of a little hut on the beach. Go to the hut and tell them which break you want to go to eith airports left or right or kuta reef. It will coast you about 40000 rp return trip. Then you wait for the boat. You have to paddle out to the boat then it will take you out to the reef. You stay out for as long as you want and when you want to go in you just swim to the shoulder and hail the same boat down(they are constantly doing runs between the beach and the reef). The boat will pick you up and take you back to shore. They have little lockers and a shower at the hut to if you need somewhere to put your board bag. As for gettin around on a budget you can walk to the boat from kuta but if you wanna go to uluwatu or something then you will have to get a car. I hired a motorbike which was cheaper than a car but you gotta have some balls to ride one. Also the police are always tryin to pull you up and it can be hard to get to the spots wiithout a map. Best bet is hire a car and driver for $10 bucks a day and tell him where you wanna go.. Hope this helps. Have a good trip!

Re:Bali Help!!!!! - 2007/08/15 17:07Hey Hawk,
Don´t be nervous.... Bali is one of the most peacefull and relaxing places in the World... the only stress you will find is gonna be generated by other tourists...
If you are an experienced surfer you should head to Ulluwattu area rather than Surf in Kuta beaches... the easiest / cheapest way for transportation is to rent a Scooter.... if you dont feel confortable with that then rent a car... you can rent an old Kijang Jeep for around 10 Euros per day... gas isn´t that expensive also... If you are staying in Kuta you will probably meet other surfers in the same situation as you are... as sharing a car with others will become cheaper for you !
Drive safely.... Traffic Rules in Asia are a bit different... the first days can be a hassle but i´m sure you will do fine once you get into the Bali groove !
As for the Surf in the Reef breaks... most of them you can just paddle out from the beach.... there are a couple (Kuta Reef & Airport Reef) that you need a boat lift... just talk with the local fisherman.... they will drive you there with their small boats for 5 or 10 bucks... Schedule with them a pick up hour... and you will be safe home !
