Wannasurf - the Great Satan of surfing! - 2007/03/31 23:53Hey Wannasurf - why bother? What on earth is the point in naming and shaming spots in places like Russia, Oman and India etc? The only people likely to go there are surf 'explorers' and they don't need or want a map (that no doubt is full of inconsistencies anyway). I'd like to know exactly what wannasurf hope to achieve from doing stuff like this? By publishing such information you are doing nothing for the good of surfing but you are helping to destroy the soul of it. If you really must publish such info then don't bother with spots, just put how the swells work there and when might be the prime time to go - let people work out the rest for themselves. Those who don't have the nounce to look at maps and swell patterns themselves and work out where the best waves might be don't deserve to surf those kind of places. You are the 'Great Satan' of surfing and al-Qaeda is coming for you!

Re:Wannasurf - the Great Satan of surfing! - 2007/04/01 04:23oh bab, your so hardcore... protecting the soul of surfing... rotfl
So I suppose the Duke's famous 1914 surf tour which introduced "hawaiian surf riding" to the world was also part of this destruction - and you're obviously a better spokesman for the sport then that lame old timer ever was.... duh.

Re:Wannasurf - the Great Satan of surfing! - 2007/04/01 17:53So you don't think that it doesn't have the slighest sniff of being wrong that something like wannasurf happily exposes spots left, right and centre so that car loads of people can turn up and ride them. i'll grant you that it needs some supposedly local surfer to actually put these spots up online in the first place but my guess is that almost no frequent, long term surfers post info up in this website - you only have to look at some of the photos and descriptions to know that... Of course the guys who run this site might say that they cannot check whether every new beach going up is in fact a well hidden local spot, but that is no excuse, they can and should - i know for a fact that both the normal travelguide industry, the big players in the surf guide industry and the international surf media, have a certain set of morals that they, largely, stick too, but to me it seems that wannasurf have no morals whatsoever and don't give a s**t whether they are exposing secrets (though you can bet your right arm they don't allow their secrets to go online). Then there are the places like Oman, India, russia etc - I'm sorry, but their is no point in putting these places up - there are no local surfers and not really any visiting surfers, the very, very few who go there are going for the adventure and that shold not be spoilt by websites like wannasurf taking that away for their own (probable?)financial gain.

Re:Wannasurf - the Great Satan of surfing! - 2007/04/01 18:13Car loads of people? What, in Oman? Russia? Papua New Guinea? Face it, if there is car access, there ARE no "Well hidden local spots"

Re:Wannasurf - the Great Satan of surfing! - 2007/04/01 18:23Let me know, bab: I suppose you have travelled for a surftrip. Tell me honestly: did you use a surf map or surfguide? no? never ? you're the man!
The question is not only where to go. A local will have always better waves because he knows WHEN to go to score the best conditions even of the most crowded spots. That's why a surfguide will always stay incomplete.
The second point is related to the "secret spots". On Azores Island, they didn't want to reveal their secret spots...until one of them was destroyed...But it was too late as no one knew about it.
Think about this: there are more and more surfers. If we want to protect our surf spots, we need to know them better. It's more important that to have a selfish session.

Re:Wannasurf - the Great Satan of surfing! - 2007/04/06 16:51I recently put forum on the general section entitled "What gets under your skin?"
Having just read your forum.....your just the sort of person who is ideal subject matter for that forum. If you don't have anything constructive to add to the website, such as helping those new to the sport, or you just have a pompous opinion about the website, do us all a favour and keep it to yourself and take your selfish attitude elsewhere.
