Better for newbie, Equador or Peru? - 2007/02/18 10:27 Hey I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what would be better for someone learning how to surf ... Equador or Peru?

I won't have a car so I'll be busing it for either one so incase you were going to recommend a nice spot 5 or 6 hours by car, can't do that ...

thanks in advance to those that reply! by the way, I'll be going Feb.23-26th if anyone else is already in one of those places or wants to go

Re:Better for newbie, Equador or Peru? - 2007/02/18 14:24 the water is warmer in ecuador, but for a good range of surf-spots the area around punta hermosa in peru is great, also good surf hostels, good food etc.. also in northern peru near mancora. I don't know ecuador well enough to recommend places.

Re:Better for newbie, Equador or Peru? - 2007/02/19 12:35 Ecuador only has two spots for beginners:

(1 Pico Nerd
and
(2 Punta Blanca
---------------------------------------------------------
Peru Has three:

(1 Pimental

(2 Makaha

(3 Redondo
----------------------------------------------------------
Peru has 8 surfschools listed while Ecuador has zero. Rememer that Peru is Larger than Ecuador so in a way they're almost the same. I'd recomend Peru, because of it's number of surf schools. I'd go to Lima because it had the most spots listed.

Re:Better for newbie, Equador or Peru? - 2007/02/21 23:59 I have been to Lima last year and there was always some swell running. Not too big so ok for beginners. The water in Lima is pretty dirty though ...
I also recommend the San Bartolo area a bit in the south as it is less crowded and quite easy to reach --> taxis are cheap. Hostals also. And the waves are better.
Apart from La Herradura, the waves in central Lima are mostly suited for beginners.
Have fun!!!
