Future of the Mentawais(Indonesia)??? - 2006/12/26 07:20 The past few years have turned the Mentawais into a surfing circus, with crowds getting crazy and tentions rising high, but still people seem to pay big bucks to surf there.

A few years ago laws were drawn up by the Mentawai goverment regarding the control of tourism in the area, the laws were passed but not yet enforced.

So what is the go???

Will or can these laws be enforced?

There is only five tourism/resort licences.

But there is now at least seven resorts/surf camps???

Crowds will only get worst next season, if the laws are to be enforced if they can?...you would expect that to happen soon?

And if it does there is a section in the laws that states that all tourist visiting the mentawais must stay at one of these resorts or on a boat charter operated under the licence holder.(not exact wording)

So that looks like the end to Feral land based travellers if enforced.

Personally I find it hard to see how five companys(licence holders) could give more back to the community than other methods.

Any thoughts or anyone know if these laws will be enforced?

Re:Future of the Mentawais(Indonesia)??? - 2006/12/27 12:38 Mentawais and Indo
I suspect it will all pan out alright in the end, but there will be a few bumpy rides along the way.

One thing thing that will change will be some resort and boats self-imposed 'prvate' knowledge of the breaks. There are about 20-30+ world class waves in all the Mentawais (not including the Telos), about another 30+ that are just very good, and about another 30 that are average. Probably about 80+ waves in total.

So far these waves have mostly been the exclusive domain of entrepeneuers knowledge, (and use) with the usual harping on about not revealing spots, so as to ensure you stay and surf in 'their' areas.

Another thing that might flare over time is exlusive use of breaks. Macaronis resort apparerntly has exclusive rights to the Macaronis wave, but does not currently enforce it. Other resorts will probably go the same way. While some may lament this, already it is the case that surfers are only shown the waves resort and boat operators want them to surf, and cheaper alternatives are not encouraged, or made known. This will change, with the loudest vioces coming from those who have an interest in keeping things 'secret'.

Long term I see a better future. Somewhere where all waves are pretty much accessible, and crowds and prices sort themselves out accordingly. This is already the case in Bali, with about the same number of waves per equivalent area. ALso, islands to the north (Telos, Siberut, west coast Nias, Banyaks, Simeulue, Andamans, Engano, mainland Sumatra, etc) will open up, with the usual complaints, as people naturally migrate to other similar waves.

The are plenty of other waves in all of Indo. There are about 100+ world class waves probably, currently only those known are those either most accessible, and most commercialised.

As for uncrowded boat trips, ther is plenty of remote islands in the Pacific, like north of Tahiti, (Tuamotus)which probably will never be crowded.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Re:Future of the Mentawais(Indonesia)??? - 2006/12/27 14:47 I agree with all you have said your correct in all your points.

But what if....The laws that were drawn up a few years ago by the Mentawai goverment that were passed but just have not as yet been enforced are enforced if it is at all possible.

To see these laws search Mentawais laws and you should find them in english it's not an easy read but could affect all surfers visiting the mentawais in the future, look at the prices now with a huge amount of competition imagine just 5 operators??? and no acess allowed without using one of the 5 operators/licence holder.

Macaronis in theory has exclusive use of the break only under these laws as part of the laws allows a buffer zone in wich they can control (from memory of 1 km, although i think it depends on the amount of people the resort caters for) this i think is from the resort boundary (for more info read the laws)

But if they choose to enforce these laws there are many other waves that could fall in the zones (if they own a licence) these waves COULD include e-bay, pit stops, hideaways, rifles and other playground area waves,Lances, maccas.

I have tried to keep all information correct but please check the local laws yourself for coprrect wording.

Re:Future of the Mentawais(Indonesia)??? - 2006/12/27 14:47 I acidentally posted twice, so ive deceided to edit this like i said I do agree with what you have said but for people out there reading we must note that many of the areas you mention have good waves(please no wave names) but aren't the next mentawais as they also have a lot of but's as in But need lots of swell, But need light winds, but need certain directions of swell, hence lack consitancy of the Ments hence not as commercially viable, hence not as exploited but therestill on there day can be good and uncrowded but must also note without half speaking decent Bahasa Indonesia are currently almost imposible to get too, that is the beauty of the offshore sumatran islands, you cant just catch a bemo to the beach, just getting to the areas is a mission then getting from wave to wave, island to island is also a mission, with the key word being time.

Re:Future of the Mentawais(Indonesia)??? - 2007/01/23 20:23 Over 100 views and only one reply???

Doesn't anyone care, you may have to buy your way into perhaps the best waves in the world?

Doesn't anyone smell a rat?

Re:Future of the Mentawais(Indonesia)??? - 2007/01/26 16:15 The thing is that the Mentawai government decides what it wants...The only thing sis maybe to make them understand that a lot of people will benefit form the tourism.
