I know the Mentawais have more to offer than i can handle, but does Padang its self have anything? I'm also wondering how long it takes to get out to the Metawais from Padang. No matter what, I'm stoked for Indo!

it is so late response, but I have that info for you. There are few surf spot for local in Padang. Pasir Putih beach, 15 minutes from downtown to the north side and Air Manis beach 40 minutes to the south, you must pass the hill (with beautiful sightseeing) to get close over beach. Those for beginner. And the closest, Purus beach but to get the waves you must paddle passing dirty water and quite crowded.At he river mouths, it breaks like lowers, but extremely polluted.
It takes around 12 hours to Mentawai from Padang by night ferry. Few months ago there is a flight from Padang airport to rokot, mentawai airport. It takes 30 minutes and another 30 minutes by boat to Tua Pejat, the capital of Mentawai Islands, located In Sipora Island.
