Re:biarritz - 2007/01/15 22:23 oh yes... you are guaranteed big... CROWDS. July is when it starts getting very busy, and its also when there is the biggest risk (mid summer) of it being flat for days (weeks) on end. Best season for this part of the world is September-October as the water is still warm, the autumn swells start to arrive and most holiday makers have gone home. Second best is Jan-Feb, with cold winter days and clean swell, but cold water - judging from your photo album, cold-water doesn't appear to much of an issue for you

Re:biarritz - 2007/01/15 22:39 is it sure that the waves turn flat in the mid summer or is it just once in a while??? is there any place near by where the waves are big in the mid summer for sure??? i'm really looking forward to surf some warmer water so it would be a bit disapointing with flat waves

Re:biarritz - 2007/01/16 10:03 surfboy,

pico23 is right about biarritz in the summer - its a nightmare for crowds, and waves are unpredictable at best.

a better bet is portugal, particularly south west portugal. I've been for the last 4 summers, its been very hot and waves (from poor to epic) have been available every day. if you travel north of the algarve region you can get empty beaches with no hassle. Last august I surfed 10 ft faces with only 4 other fellas in the water.

there is much less attitude in the water, and the food is cheap and good in the alentejo region.

Re:biarritz - 2007/01/16 14:49 hi. is portugal also a place for my girlfriend in the mid summer??? she has never tried surfing before and she's scared about the wiev of to big waves. biarritz seemed perfect to us because we could drive all the way down there, and its nice to have a car by your side when your looking for the best spot. if we go to portugal its have to be by plane, and then we can only surf at one spot so is there any place a bit closer to denmark where the waves are good in the summer time?

Re:biarritz - 2007/01/16 18:49 SURFBOY,

PORTUGAL IS NICE PLACE TO TAKE YOUR GIRLFRIEND. MY WIFE LOVES PORTUGAL SO MUCH WE BOUGHT A HOUSE THERE. HOWEVER I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DRIVING FROM DENMARK TO PORTUGAL. I HAVE DRIVEN FROM THE UK TO BIARRITZ ONCE, THE SECOND TIME I FLEW - IT IS A HELL JOURNEY. THE COST FUEL IS PROBABLY THE SAME AS A FLIGHT FROM DENMARK (ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ADD IN THE ROAD TOLLS).

IF YOU GO TO PORTUGAL IN MID SUMMER A HIRE CAR IS ABOUT 600 EUROS FOR A FORTNIGHT. YOU WOULD DEFINITELY WANT A HIRE CAR AS THERE ARE NO SUMMER BREAKS NEAR ANY AIRPORT.

I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND PORTUGAL OVER FRANCE - THE CROWDS IN BIARRITZ ARE AWFUL, AND BY ALL ACCOUNTS GETTING A BIT AGGRESSIVE.
