Re:Australia! - 2006/12/31 17:08Try Byron Bay on the east coast. Plenty of surf schools and learners. Lots of backpackers hostels, and easy waves.

Re:Australia! - 2007/01/04 22:00Theres many places around Sydney. Theres Manly, with a few schools, rent a board places and nice small waves. Its a very touristy place. Bondi beach also might be a good place.
Both manly and bondi have hostels and sightseeing closeby. Have fun, See ya in the surf one day!

Re:Australia! - 2007/01/21 19:16Above are both pretty good suggestions. I'll add some more for you:
Where I grew up, Ocean Grove, has a good variety of waves all within short driving distances of each other. Ocean Grove main beach is a good beach for learning and there are a few surf schools around. Plenty of places to stay
You might want to consider Perth if you want to stay in a city and learn to surf. The surf, in my opinion, isn't that good there, but I haven't surfed there too much though. Plenty of people do surf there, so it must get good occasionally. It's a nice city and the water is warm.
Hope that helps.
