surfing in the gambia? - 2006/12/23 04:40hey all, anyone had a surf in the gambia? went out a couple of years ago, great place, lovely people. heard thru family that theyre starting up kiteboarding there big time, to draw the tourists i guess. the only watersport i saw was bodyboarding,(i was desperate, ok? you try finding a surfboard out there!!), the coast definitly has potential.... any wisdom?

Re:surfing in the gambia? - 2006/12/24 23:44a year ago I planned a trip to gambia to and did some research if there was any surf. for some weird reason I ended up going to india instead off gambia but I did found out that there is surf there.a south african guy told me he saw an article in a SA surfmag once and they had pics off all these left points and gnarly shark stories. and from severall dutch people who went there I heard there is surf for sure but you should search. if its realy shit just hop over to senegal

Re:surfing in the gambia? - 2007/01/05 02:29thanks for the info vgaal, will try and track down said article. Ive got family out there, but surfing, or swimming even, doesnt seem to interest Gambians much. Weird...

I'll ignore that comment and put it down to you trying to give it large among the surfer.
I have lived in Hawaii, California and now Africa and while that Surfboard/Bodyboard thing is around it is always boring.
Anyway, I live in The Gambia and I'd be willing to share any local knowledge with folks looking for good waves here.
No surf shops (I had to drive 5 hours last weekend to get some new equipment) so bring your own. I was out with a cool guy from Cornwall yesterday enjoying 7ft barrels at Senegambia and he paid £20 to get his board out here.
I am adding info to regional surf spots on here and will get some pics and videos for you to check out.
Peace
Tunks

Re:surfing in the gambia? - 2008/01/08 06:51I agree to Tunks, there is definately surf in The Gambia! Been there in april a couple of years ago and saw consistant swell of 1-1,5mtr. (3-5ft.) over a 3 weeks period. No real flat day in between. That was nearby Serekunda on the endless-long beach leading from the Gambia rivermouth down south to the border of Senegal. Unfortunately I was not on a surftrip and had no board with me. Only stick to get was a plastic windsurf board around 10'long and squarecut styrofoam pieces. Anyway - the waves took me away. Tunks, would be fine to have a surfspots input to the "Surf Altlas" from You!
