mellow surf + baby - 2012/03/09 01:46 Dear all, dont know if anyone can help, but my wife and I plan to do a one month surf trip next february. We are looking for:

- Warm location in February (not too rainy either)
- Mellow surf (3ft-5ft). We only have approx. 10 weeks surfing experience
- Practical to bring a baby (cannot be too primitive)
- Not crowded
- Not too expensive (living costs USD 100 per day)

We do not look for perfect waves, but rather have some average waves where there are few people.

I welcome suggestions!

Lars

Re:mellow surf + baby - 2012/03/09 03:41 Hi Lars,
I'm thinking you meant March, right?
If U.S. is your destination, west coast is ok. On the West coast you will need wetsuits this time of year, stick to inexpensive places in San Diego county. The beaches do not get too crowded at this time, babies are welcome, just not on a board in the water! Beaches are mostly not crowded unless there happens to be a heat wave.
Take care & have a good time. $100 a day is doable, but you'll need tons of discipline!

Re:mellow surf + baby - 2012/03/10 05:02 Where are you coming from? February is the wettest month of the year in California and cold. Water temp
will be lucky to hit 60F. $100 US a day for 2 people
will barely get you by in Costa Rica let alone SOCAL!

Re:mellow surf + baby - 2012/03/11 19:49 do mean February - next February. Also considered California, but I guess it will be too cold. Even San Diego did not seem too warm at this time a year.

Have no idea how safe it is (or convenient) to go with a baby to Costa Rica or Nicaragua? I may overreact but do not wish to go to Mexico with a baby after all the writings regarding increasing crime rate

Re:mellow surf + baby - 2012/03/11 20:00 We went to Peru with a 3 month old (from Europe a few years back. Warm weather (its southern hemisphere, so that is summer), but the water can be cold depending on the Nino/nina currents...). I don't think basic criminality is an issue in Costa Rica or Peru, but more ordinary issues - car travel (or worse public transport) is much less safe than at home, likewise medical issues mean you don't want to be anywhere too isolated. We stayed within about 50km of Lima which has excellent medical facilities. make sure your insurance is good and valid. Minor caveat was that we had previously lived in Lima for 2 years, so knew *exactly* what were were getting into (albeit the bit with a baby was new to us). Rent a beach house, get a local nanny to help out, enjoy the beach and the surf

Re:mellow surf + baby - 2012/03/12 02:56 Hey Pisco

Pisco you are well traveled indeed! Costa Rica would be fine exact I would not take a baby there. When surfing Stone Fish Reef by Playa Negra I wore reef shoes as if you do step on a Stone Fish your done! Its about one and a half hour drive to the airport at Liberia and then you would have to fly (DOA) to the hospital in San Jose.

Here is the solution, Waikiki Beach, Oahu. With so many super packages, including air and hotel plus cheap rent a cars, believe it or not, its cheaper than Tamarino, Costa Rica!

Now that means its Portuguese breakfast at McDonalds, home made picnic sandwiches for lunch in the Park at Ala Moana, then Spaghetti Factory, Souplantion or Jimmy Buffett's at the Beachcomber for dinner, ALOHA!
