Kauai vs. Nicaragua vs. Costa Rica in late August - 2011/07/18 15:20 Want to go somewhere to learn to surf for two weeks at the end of August. Thinking of Kauai, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Nicaragua looks awesome and a bit more laid back, but the surf looks like it might be pretty big/not good for learning?

Costa Rica looks OK, maybe touristy? Also wonder about size of surf and it being the rainy season (come to think of it this applies to Nicaragua).

Kauai looks like good beginner surf and good weather (i.e. no rain), but it lacks the not North American vibe (before anyone gets too angry, I've been there and loved it)

Any thoughts/advice would be welcome.

Thanks,

Dan

Re:Kauai vs. Nicaragua vs. Costa Rica in late August - 2011/07/19 09:03 Sup brah, i recommend u costa rica, i learned there in jaco beach. Its a great place for learning, good size waves and the beach is really big you can surf on any spot you want, about localism its not a big deal in jaco beach since there are alot of tourists and stuff.

Re:Kauai vs. Nicaragua vs. Costa Rica in late August - 2011/07/19 10:26 Hi Dan,
I guess it depends on what kind of trip you are looking for.
Do you want more of an adventure (maybe more than surf?)Do you want laid back, easy surf experience? By laid back, I mean people and environment. I have not been to Nicarauga, but Kaui & Costa Rica are nice. Kaui I would not consider a beginner place to learn, and the surf might be less than you hope for this time of year. Better do a place in Hawaii that has slow rollers, nice and easy to get out, paddle and go for it. I recommend Oahu or better, the Big Island.

Costa Rica, it might be the rainy season, but so what, bring bug spray! There are a few spots that are easy to learn over there.

If budget is any concern, go to Southern California, there are many good places to learn here. San Onofre is perfect. The vibe is sometimes a little hyper (LA to Orange County area) Northern Cal and San Diego are pretty laid back and there are many places to choose from for learning.

Re:Kauai vs. Nicaragua vs. Costa Rica in late August - 2011/08/02 07:48 No spots to learn in Kaui or Nicaragua. Go to Tamarindo or Jaco in Costa Rica but ever though its third world its more expensive than Kaui unless you slum it!

Re:Kauai vs. Nicaragua vs. Costa Rica in late August - 2011/09/13 17:57 I got a friend who lives in niguaria but there the waves are really big not much people most of them are locals. If i was u i should rent a 4x4 and look for spots with a local round there who can guide you to mybe some secret spots. In costa rica i went there 3 times i musst say it is really nice to go because the envirronenment and the people are really nice it is true a lot of peple but if u go to playa grande there are no tourists just locals and in the monts octobre and novembre the waves are hughe soo if i have to chose it's costa rica
