Re:where to go surfing in April/May? - 2010/03/17 04:44 Sorry I will have to veto the other response for surfing in the DR, Cabarete in May . . . it is rainy season and the swell is not so good. Best time is end of Nov to about April. You will be disappointed if you go in May even though it is a really cool town. If you are a beginner there are lots of sea urchins and reef where you have to go out.
So far for surfing in May I have found the East Cape of the Baja peninsula to be the best at that time, you would probably stay in San Jose Del Cabo and you would need to rent a car and tent - do your research, it is NOT developed. Nine palms is the name of the surf break.
Costa Rica is good times too, not sure about may but was there in the fall and Santa Teresa had a pretty nice head to overhead swell with a beach break - pretty sweet - only problem is you are looking at spending 50 dollars a night and up.
There is always Hawaii if your budget can afford it, pretty consistent so I have heard from my friends that have gone.
Good luck May is always a tough one.

Re:where to go surfing in April/May? - 2010/03/20 07:10 Hi Jax,

The rainy season in Cabarete and at the north side of the DR is from Nov-March but usually after February there are only sporadic rain showers for a short time. From Nov. - April we get the bigger swells mostly N,NE or NW but also the rest of the year there are waves nearly every day, especially good for beginners and to practice. One of the biggest and best days surfing last year was 21 of August when Hurricane Bill send us some great 8ft waves. The main spot Playa Encuentro offers perfect conditions for beginners, intermediate and I have hardly seen a better one to learn. Concerning the reef, all the beginners get reef booties from the surfschools and as soon as you know how to paddle all right you won´t need them anymore.
For really good surfers we had some great days within the last weeks here. Solid 6 ft today and the advanced spots were working really good. Hope it goes on like this.
Have a look at the pic. We were surfing with humpback whales yesterday-)
