East Coast Surf Trip Help - 2009/08/08 06:31 Hey- I am planning on driving the east coast from NJ to FL in two weeks with two friends. I was hoping people could give me some pointers on good places to surf, scenery, food, entertainment, and campgrounds. I am on a budget here which is why I mentioned the campgrounds. I have NJ, DE, NC, and South FL covered and have a good idea where to go there (I have friends to stay with in these places).

Thus, I could use some help with MD, VA, SC, def GA, and North/ Central FL. And suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!

Re:East Coast Surf Trip Help - 2009/08/10 06:14 that should be a fun trip.....especially if you time it with a good tropic swell.

va beach can have ok surf...been a while since i wet my feet there, but some small glassy lines can be found at daylight.
i would bring a funshape or meaty fish.

now that the summer flat spells are over,SC, will be going off with windswell, groundswell, local storms, and (HOPEFULLY)some tropical action will grace us soon.
I surfed waist to stomach glass yesterday morning here in charleston.
some spots on the north end would be cherry grove pier, garden city pier and north litchfield.

charleston area: of course the washout here at folly is our bread and butter.
Its considered the best in the state.
the wave can be fast and meaty, but tends to close out during SW winds. mornings are usually clean til around 9am.
most days during prime incoming tide its usually around 2-3ft but gets much bigger on good swells.
Isle of Palms can produce nice less crowded lines during swell.
Kiawah island produces better quality but breaks less often.

south of charleston: Hunting island in beaufort is the nicest longboard wave ive found.
its slow and chunky. the scenery down there can't be beat.
Fripp island can and does go off regularly, but getting a pass to get on the island can be tough. i usually tell them i am looking at real estate.

S.Ga: theres really no surf. tybee can break, but its inconsistent and disorganized.

N.Fla: do research....the list is too big.

good luck.
