Portugal in September - Surf & Family - 2009/07/06 19:26 Hello to all forum users

I am a new member and this is my first post here, so any tips would be most welcome.

I am an experienced surfer travelling from Ireland to Portugal this September, planning to stay in Ericeira. The only thing I have booked are flights (Lisbon) so everything else is a moveable feast.

I will be travelling with my wife and (then) 9 month old daughter.

I am looking for some recommendations for good spots that will suit us all ie. a nice beach for my wife with decent waves for me. Not looking for anything epic, medium size waves would be just fine (I've been a longboarder for years). Basically I don't want to have to dump the wife and child the whole time while I go off surfing!

We will have a car so day trips are always an option. We have 2 weeks so might consider 1 week in Ericeira and another around Peniche.

Any suggestinos would be most welcome!

Thanks all
Matthew

Re:Portugal in September - Surf & Family - 2009/07/06 22:20 quite a tough one - because whenever you are surfing, your wife will be one-on-one with baby: hot beaches are not really a great idea, at least not for any length of time.

I did a similar trip last year with kids (2+4), not exactly babies but still needed constant attention. We stayed near Peniche in a hotel which had a play area and swimming pools - good for kids. Again, not great for babies

imho your best plan is to find a place (depending on budget) where you can get settled for a few days at a time, you go surfing for say, dawn-patrol or evenings, and resign yourself to non-surfing time the rest of the day - maybe find a spa for you wife (she probably needs a rest too

Both Peniche and Ericera fit the bill - with a good variety of surf spots in easy reach.

Re:Portugal in September - Surf & Family - 2009/07/07 06:29 Hi Matthew,

What dates are you going? I am going to the same area with my wife and baby (will also be 9 months) for a week in mid-September, most likely dates are 16th to 23rd.
I'm not that experienced but maybe we can meet up for a surf.

Cheers
Sean

Re:Portugal in September - Surf & Family - 2009/07/08 02:26 Agree with Pisco23, Ericeira to Peniche coast has a great choice of beaches for surfers with family. Accommodation, food etc is good standard. From Lisbon, first go up to Ericeira, don't waste time near Lisbon wich is too crowded. Evenings are quite cool at n/w Portugal, so bring warm glothing for the kid.
Waves are frequently good at sept., water can get 17°C due to deep sea currents fm one day to another, but may also be 21°C with calm sea.
Enjoy the trip!

we just booked the atlanticogolfehotel near peniche for the beginning of august, seems quite nice, I go there with family, all nonsurfers, although my 8yr old daughter will get here first try, she has been practicing this summer in the local shorebreak. so when I am there I will give you an update.
