Surf Schools on Oahu near Makaha - 2009/04/04 07:35 Hi everyone,

I'm heading to Oahu at the end of April/early May with my family. We're staying in Makaha and there are a couple of us who want to surf, neither being very experienced.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a surf school in the area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Re:Surf Schools on Oahu near Makaha - 2009/04/04 09:23 Yeah ... Makaha is not a nice area, stay away ... if the locals don't get you their pit bulls will! Go to Waikiki Beach period!

Re:Surf Schools on Oahu near Makaha - 2009/04/04 11:05 Mahalo for the advice, but we're already booked. Waikiki's not really our scene, so that's why we wanted to go a little out of the way. We usually go to Maui, but wanted to go see more of Oahu this time.

We'll do our best to respect the locals as we love Hawaii.

Re:Surf Schools on Oahu near Makaha - 2009/04/05 03:30 Makaha is not a tourist area, its where the islanders live. There is nothing to do, nowhere to go and the surf is narly. Do not walk around at night and do not leave anything
in your car. Makaha Point only breaks a few times a year and
is extremely dangerous. The rest of the nearby breaks are isolated shark havens and the locals do not like haloes surfing their spots. Try Ala Moana State Beach Park, good vibe, good waves. Do not stop to buy roasted chicken or pineapples at roadside stalls you will get robbed and beat up!

Re:Surf Schools on Oahu near Makaha - 2009/04/12 18:08 Aloha there,

don't know much about Makaha surfing. I've surfed mainly around Alamoana Harbor and Park. But try I friend of mine. The team is an awesome bunch and I know that they pick up people from Ko Olina frequently. Maybe they will come to Makaha if it's surfable. You guys could also meet around Barber's Point. Just concact:‎ www.girlswhosurf.com (not only for girls!). BTW you should take the advice of DrC123 seriously. And I agree that it is not the nicest place to stay. If you're a bunch of people you could probably find an apartement or so to rent around Haleiwa. More fun, guarenteed! Anyway, lots of Aloha,
Kilikine

Re:Surf Schools on Oahu near Makaha - 2009/04/14 05:08 Mahalo for the suggestions - we'll be checking them out for sure. We are definitely taking everyone's advice very seriously. We only want a relaxed vacation with our family and friends and will do our best to stay out of harm's way.

Aloha,
Megcanada
