Northern Sumatra/Malaysia - 2009/01/08 04:41 Hey there,
I'm going to Thailand in feb to visit friends and thought I could go down to Malaysia and then Northern Sumatra in order to squeeze in a bit of surfing too. Since Im not a great surfer, I realise that the Mentaway islands are out of my league and there seems to be mostly reefbreacks in Sumatra but I was wondering if you guys know fun and fairly easy spots in that area? Any help would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,
Maddy

Re:Northern Sumatra/Malaysia - 2009/01/08 05:55 you might also look at eastern thailand...there are some spots there in the atlas. Don't know when the swell is good though...

Re:Northern Sumatra/Malaysia - 2009/01/08 07:02 thanks! Will keep that in mind, thought that there'd be hardly any chance with Thailand being very inconistant etc. but will definitly look into it properly! Any first hand expiriences? I wont bother bringing my board since unfortunatly the main focus of this trip isn't surfing as nobody else is that keen (although im trying my best to incooperate ... is it possible to hire in Thailand then?

Sorry, im literally throwing questions about...

But in any case thanks for ur quick answer again!

Re:Northern Sumatra/Malaysia - 2009/01/11 13:22 I spose if you wanted to try something a bit further out (2hours by plane) there is always Borneo. Decent surf for beginners to intermediate December through to Feb. Im living in Brunei right now and we just had some of the biggest swells roll in that i've seen in nearly 4years living here. Even the more experienced riders were going on about how good the sets were. So might be worth a look

Re:Northern Sumatra/Malaysia - 2009/01/21 21:58 hi maddy , my name is marc from Australia, I will be in malaysia on the 12th feb, and hopefully get the last of the waves at east coat malaysia , cherating and tioman island then of to bali , borneo, philippines, back to malaysia then up to phuket till mid may, waves will be a bit small a little hard to find if mother nature not kind , but getting there and home are half the fun. not going anywhere to hard core all places have waves for basically all surfers standards, even the philippines happy to catch up and go find and share a few waves in malaysia on your way through. Booked all my tickets through air asia it was a $164 aust return to KL for march- april to bali, probably safer, more wave choices, and easier to get around than northern sumatra, so check them out for cheap tickets.Check out ecsurf.com on malaysia and another real good site to look world wide is surfline.com.. good luck ,hope to catch up for a beer in KL . and see if our travel and surf plans cross over anywhere. bye your mate marc
