Also, Is taking the other half on a boat for 10 days a good idea?

Same advice : www.SumatranSurfariis.com you can simply ask them some tips in case their own offers do not satisfy you. They are top-serious indeed, operating their baots for years in the region and able to bring you anywhere in safety.

Regarding the hotels, i would say you should check around before you go... especially after the Padang earthquake two days ago.
Several hotels are now down and still with people trapped inside.
