Guatemala and Surfing - 2007/07/13 06:19 I'm going to guatemala for a weekend in August to someone's wedding. I'll be staying in the southern parts on the pacific coast, any chance I'll find decent enough surf that I should bother bringing my board for? I've done a little research and noticed it's all basically beachbreaks with offshore winds in the morning, I'm just not sure if the swell is consistent enough for me to pay the airline fee for boardbag costs. Since I'm only there for 2 days...

Re:Guatemala and Surfing - 2007/07/13 16:46 g day mate

I surfed there a couple of years ago on the way to mexico from panama. there is waves but i saw nothing really good but I guess it depends how much surf youve been getting at home. If the waves are good at home I would probally just go for a holiday and get smashed. why not check the swell forecast and make a choice on that.

Re:Guatemala and Surfing - 2007/07/13 20:54 It's definitely gotta be better than where I am in South Florida. July/August are pretty flat here until the hurricanes start picking up. I will definitely check the forcast, then make a call based on that. Thanks.

Re:Guatemala and Surfing - 2007/09/07 02:28 I'm back and I have to say there is definitely some good surf in Guatemala! Turns out it was stormy for about a week before I arrived so I was really fortunate as the surf was about 6'+ and glassy with the morning offshores. I didn't plan on surfing during my trip until the last minute when I contacted Pedro Pablo at Maya Extreme to see about doing a day trip. It was so worth it! Turns out they were filming a follow up to the surf video The Endless Journey Continues with Robert August and Wingnut the week before I showed up at Marina del Sur. Most of the crew had just left but there were a few who stayed behind to score the best waves up to that point. I ended up renting a board instead of bringing mine and as luck would turn out they had the exact same board I own! God was smiling on me that day as everything went perfectly. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Who would have thought it would be so good in Guatemala?
