I´m a swede so excuse my english =0). Gonna go for a surftrip in august by car. Thinking about going down the coast of France but a bit worried about the wave quality. Anyone been there and might give me some pointers about rideable spots in august? Best (read cheapest) accomodation alternatives, thinking about sleeping in the car mainly. How is localism generally, read that the locals are ill-tempered?
Peace

Re:Advice on France - 2007/05/26 05:15August is pretty flat, but since it is already over-run with tourists, most 'popular' beaches don't have too many issues with localism. Stay polite, don't be a kook, and in most places, if you walk 500m or 1km away from the beach access points you can surf uncrowded peaks.
Sleeping in the car, parked up on one of the big carparks is tolerated, in the forests you'll have to deal with the charming french police.... guess what, you're not the first person to have had this idea, and the tolerance is low...
Enjoy

Re:Advice on France - 2007/05/26 06:29If ur lucky august can provide u some descent waves.
I've went for several years on trips to france and have always slept in the car in parkings both in and out of the woods. Although there is plenty of visits from the police they have never bothered me. I've heard there is a law in france that allows u to sleep on a parking lot for one night. What i've seen is that 'le police' writes down ur numberplate when they make their tour. Anyway i've never stayed at one spot for more than one night, maybe that's why they never bothered me. Could anyone tell me if this law i've heard about is for real and my one night parking sleepover strategy is the reason why i've never had problems.............or was it just luck

Re:Advice on France - 2007/05/26 19:31Yes it can be flat during august but you can score really great waves after the 15 of august.
Around Biarritz to Hossegor: water quality is not a problem except after a big storm. Be carefull of the crowd, wake up early and stay cool...
Between souston to hourtin: there are less crowd: maybe it's the best place during summer to be quiet if you walk only 10 min.
Brittany: really great but it can be flat. Ok for the crowd.

Re:Advice on France - 2007/05/30 21:33Discretion and good manners go a long way with our french cousins, be nice, follow etiquette in the line up. Bon jour and a smile can go a long way. Slept in the car many times, no probs. Just dont leave a pile of rubbish, or worse, when you leave for the next spot. Last August was windy, gave us some heaving great waves, scary.... Bon vacance mon ami!
