Help me buying a new board - 2007/05/05 20:16 hey guys and girls!

i wanna buy a new board for my girlfriend and because i have absolutly no idea... i wanted to ask if someone could help me and tell me if its completly crap or if its worth to spend some money on it...

alright... that are the details...

-Constructed using "surfblanks" foam with a single stringer, glassed with 6oz glass on the deck and 4oz on the bottom.
-Polished gloss finish
-Length: 7'2"
-Width: 21"
-Thickness: 2 1/2"
-Adjustable Fin System: FCS Tri-fin

i dunno but i heard that you have to take care about the weigh also.. otherwise it could break... so yeah... my girlfriend has about 60-65 kg... she wont tell me so.. yeah...

but lots of thanks for any help or advice you could give me
cheers

Re:Help me buying a new board - 2007/05/05 20:40 That sounds about right for a beginner. Is it a modern shortboard shape or is it a mini-mal (round nose)? If your friend has never surfed, I'd probably recommend buying a mini-mal to start off with, as these are usually shaped with the beginner in mind, i.e. they are a little easier to ride, and have heaps of volume in the deck to help paddling, as well as a few other differences such as rail shape and amount of rocker etc.

If it is a shortboard style (has a pointy end) then it may be more of a gun for big waves, however 21" wide is a lot for a gun, so it should be O.K?

At the end of the day, it comes down to whether your friend likes it or not. Everyone has preferences for different boards and shapes to suit their individual surfing style. The golden rule with beginners boards is you're better to have a board too big, than too small.

Re:Help me buying a new board - 2007/05/06 08:25 Everything scruffblue has said true. there are a couple of other things to consider:
1. Cost - If buying minimal off the rack i.e not a custom build make sure its cheap. Minimals are by in large bought by beginners, they have a limited life (in terms of experience), so don't pay over the odds as they are generic boards and not specific.
2. If you girlfriend is a beginner consider a longboard as the wave count will increase dramatically and board time = fun time. I hate to promote longboards this way but its a fact. The only drawback is travelling with a longboard. They are a pain, believe me I've taken them all over the world and airlines can get stroppy about them.

Best of luck

Re:Help me buying a new board - 2007/05/08 15:25 you cant beat a mini mal for beginners.. i started learning on a shortboard and was progressing OK surfing regularly.. but as soon as you have long spells without surfing you regress.. i went two years without surfing and had to start from scratch so i bought a mini mal/hybrid and notice significant differences each session..

the advantages of a mini mal

easier to paddle (i.e. longer sessions due to more energy)
catches waves easier (more waves per session= more practice)
can catch smaller surf (not as reliant on conditions)
greater volume & bouyancy (stand up easier)
