Surf Contests... wgaf? - 2007/02/25 19:38 Who gives a flying f### about surf contests? I mean, would you actually miss a good surf session to go watch a competition (WCT or local or anything in between...)???? I'd rather be surfing. And the worst is getting 'ordered' out of the water 'cause the contest is going to start (just when the waves get good...) - pisses me off.

I guess the local municipality gives organisers the "right" to monopolize a beach for a contest, as it brings in tourists and $$$s... but does anyone actually care?? I'd rather be pathetically surfing my arse off on a crap wave up the beach, than be sitting on the beach watching overpaid 'stars' ripping. Its not just jealousy (their talent, and the crowd free waves ... but I really couldn't care less who is winning a heat. so questions for you
1) would you miss a session to watch a competition
2) would you compete (local contests)?
3) would you watch a 'live webcast' of a contest

maybe the webmaster can add these as 'polls' here?????

Re:Surf Contests... wgaf? - 2007/02/28 01:57 i think that contests are a very good thing. I do them every once in a while to get a good gauge on how my surfing has progressed. Yes, the heats are usually not fun and it takes the joy out of surfing, but I think it is good to know what you need to work on, etc. etc.

As for watching contests, I also think they're good. After seeing one, you definitely get to see how surfing as a whole is progressing. You get to see the best guys duking it out with strategy and just see some sick surfing. Also, you get a couple ideas of things to try when out in the water-- just a new perspective.

And you seem to make such a huge deal about getting out of the water for a contest-- infact that seems to be your largest complaint. I'm sure there are other spots you can surf, and the contest comes around only once a year. Just sack up and go somewhere else for a day (or a couple incase of a WCT. And if it is a WCT, theres a good chance the waves are always good and your not missing an EPIC day). It sucks to have to do it, but is it really going to kill you to surf somewhere else? It's not your spot either, bud. Grab a fresh box of tissues, because contests are going to be around for awhile.

And yes, I watch online contests when I have time available. I don't plan my day around watching them, but when its convenient, theres not much else I would rather do/watch.
