Board size and weight, shortboards and semi gun - 2006/12/12 08:36Board size and weight.
I have had trouble finding the right size boards over the years, and came up with the following guide in the table below (for intermediate surfers of average height in good waves).
Rough guide shortboard: (Intermediate to advanced, in good quality waves 1-6 feet: or 2-10 feet faces). (If you are a little taller for your weight go the longer length, if shorter, go the shorter length. For more powerful waves, the longer lengths are also better).
70kg: 5’11-6’3 x 17.75-18.5 x 2’0-2 1/4 75kg: 6’0-6’4 x 18-18.75 x 2 1/8 -2 3/8 80kg: 6’1-6’5 x 18.25-19 x 2 ¼-2 1/2 85kg: 6’2-6’7 x 18.5-19.25 x 23/8-2 1/2 90kg: 6’4-6’8 x 18.75-19.5 x 2 3/8-2.5 95kg: 6’5-6’9 x 19-19.75 x 2.5-2 5/8 100kg: 6’6-6’10 x 19.25-20.0 x 2 5/8 105kg: 6’8-6’11 x 19.5-20.25x 25/8-2 3/4 110kg: 6’9-7’0 x 19.75-20.25 x 2 3/4 115kg: 6’10-7’2 x 20-20.5 x 2 ¾- 2 7/8
Semi Gun Rough guide: Intermediate to advanced, in good quality waves 5-10 feet (ie 10-20 foot faces): Add to above:
4-8 inches in length, increase the thickness by 1/8 to ¼ inch, decrease ¼-1/2 inch width for riding faster waves, or increase width ¼-1/2 inch for riding bigger wave faces. If you want an all round semi gun, keep the width about the same. Reduce tail width by 1-1.5 inches.
I’m 6’1 and about 100kg, and I ride 3 boards all with three fins, for Indo and Australia up to 10 feet (up to 18 foot faces), although I feel I could go a little wider to 19.75 or 20 inches. : 6’10 x 19.5 x 2 5/8 roundtail (with low rails), 7’4 x 19.5 x 2 ¾ rounded pin (low rails), 7’6 x 19.5 x 2 3/4 rounded pin (mid rails)
Any comments?

Re:Board size and weight, shortboards and semi gun - 2006/12/21 19:02Really a good guide. My experience is that a good choice is the rounded semi gun or a pintail for the biggest surfboards. I have a 6'8" and a 7'3" (check my profile) which are thicker in the middle just to allow a better paddling (safier in big waves...)
