Surfing injury - 2012/04/21 03:03 Had Arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in my left knee yesterday from years of surfing and finally, playing Golf, say what!

Apart from starving to death from midnight until 4:00 PM the next day everything went great. Fisherman Mikey drove me over in his Red on Red Dodge Van Conversion with 5 pounds of Yellow Tail in a cooler on the floor, what's that smell?

Kind of like catching a flight, you have to be there 2 hours before surgery so they can get you naked, stick you with an IV and ask you dumb questions like 'Have you ever stopped breathing on an operating table?' The surgery takes a couple of hours then they park you in recovery for another 2 hours!

Los Alamitos Hospital is like the UN, I had a Korean pre-op nurse, the orderly was Jamaican, and a Chinese Doctor. The Anesthesiologist was a cute Japanese gal and really nice, said she was going to give me Propofol just like Michael Jackson. It's good stuff, can see why he used it, woke up, couple of deep breaths of oxygen, a shot of Demerol and I was ready to go! No hangover and no sore throat.

They let me out at 7:30 PM had Bacon & Eggs with OJ and three cups of coffee when I got home, bit late for the coffee though!

First night not hurting as much as I expected, stuck a pillow under my leg, popped a 100/325 Vicodin every four hours, that knocked it down to a dull ache. Forget the ice pack, too much brace and bandage to do anything but make a mess.

Stayed in bed for two days. Third day got rid of the crutches and leg brace. My daughter came over with a care package from Fresh & Easy as I did not want to drive, my Solara is a 5-speed.

At one week, drove over for my post-op, nurse Wendy took off the knee to ankle bandage. Just a little swelling, no blood, no infection and no problems.
Can walk fine with a slight limp, driving hurts a bit.
Gave me a list of Therapy said come back in a month,
should be able to surf again in 6 weeks!

PS Got a "Get Well" card from one of the nurses ....

Re:Surfing injury - 2012/04/24 09:12 Coming up on two weeks, almost 80%, am thinking should be good to go in a month. Been watching old war movies on Youtube, just finished "The Cruel Sea" the North Atlantic, winter 1941 LOL.

Re:Surfing injury - 2012/07/24 03:38 Thanx, left knee is now 95%. Have been out in the water for the past month. (Shoulder is still a little messed up, it froze from sleeping on my right side.)It hurts the first time I straddle my board (23") and pop up, after that its ok. Can still step and nose ride no problem, but my "big swing" turns are rusty. Surgery was quite extensive, the meniscus was torn in two places, the ACL was torn and another ligament had to be re-attached. The Doc did a really great job. Before the surgery I could barely get out of bed and was living on Vicodin!I would recommend anyone who has knee problems not to wait or try the physical therapy routine. Its not going to work, have the arthroscopic as soon as possible and get it over with. You are looking at 6 weeks to 3 months maximum for full recovery and back to normal with much less pain that before the surgery! This Wednesday Ray Bay was a "regional classic" hurricane swell from Fabio off
Baja Mexico, chest to head high and light offshore. Only problem were the hordes of shortboarders from Huntington Pier which was big and walled with a nasty
rip. In closing was out at Ray Bay this morning when the Stingray's got their revenge, got hit through booties, on the side of my foot, it went in and out a couple of inches up. Nasty! After soaking in the hot bucket for and hour rushed home to pop a couple of 1,000 mil Vicodin's. Thank god I have some left.Time for a nap. Peace Out!
