Shark experiences while surfing? - 2011/06/02 22:32 surfing warm water for the first time soon....

Indo

I have a friend that had a shark bite his head!
not a surfer
he was just swimming
and said he went out too far from a beach in Bali
Him and his friend beat on it till it let go
and then swam for the beach
he said it wasnt very big
but it did put him in hospital for a month
he showed me the scars across his face and behind his ear where it bit him

Just wondering how many surfers have ever seen one surfing?

Anybody had any experiences in Bali or Indo with sharks??

Just curious.
I'm still gonna surf no matter

Re:Shark experiences while surfing? - 2011/06/07 00:24 Just 2 in 30 years, all in California, and they were non-confrontational.

Was out @ Solana Bch spot, do not know name, but it is right in front of some nice condos. In early a.m., a little fog, winter time. Saw a 2-3ft fin pop up and cruise for several feet, this was about 7-8 feet in front of me. I turned around and went in.

The other time was 15 years later, @ San Onofre. Saw a baby great white jump completely out of the water, it was about 4 ft long. And it was really cool watching that little killer acting like the baby it was.

Re:Shark experiences while surfing? - 2011/06/09 07:14 See them all the time in Florida. We also have lots of Dolphins which are friendly and like to ride waves as well. Have had them on the same wave before.Dolphins swim differently then sharks and have a different looking dorsal fin.Usually safe if dolphins are around.Best thing to do is if U can't I.D. it go in and find another spot.Always keep your eyes peeled in the water and be aware of your surroundings.Try not to surf alone or in the late evening.

Re:Shark experiences while surfing? - 2011/07/11 09:19 Seen a few reef and hammerhead in Hawaii and see young bulls and black tips often in Florida. I am a believer that if you can see them you have little to worry about, however I do tend to be much more cautious when I know they are in the area and do not surf alone. You have better odds of being struck by lightning than being bit.

Re:Shark experiences while surfing? - 2011/07/12 17:11 iTS THE ONES YOU DONT SEE THAT CAUSE YOU GRIEF,BEEN SURFING FOR 40 YEARS,PROBABLY ONLY SEEN 6/7 SHARKS WHILE SURFING ,DID SEE A TIGER SHARK EYEING ME OF AT A REMOTE SURF BREAK ON THE NORTH COAST OF NSW ,DID THE SMART THING AND GOT OUT OF THE WATER QUICKLY,AFTER ALL IT IS US WHO TRESSPASS INTO THEIR DOMAIN.
SHARKS ARE UNPREDICTABLE GIVE THEM SPACE.
OH YEAH IF THE FISH ARE BITTING AT YOUR LOCAL SURF /FISHING SPOT THE SHARKS WILL BE NEARBY.

Re:Shark experiences while surfing? - 2011/07/19 05:04 Avoid areas where there are lots of bait fish or if you see birds diving.
