Padang quake, Sumatra. - 2009/10/03 01:11 Dear all,

We knew it would come someday. Padang is the most vulnerable place on the coastline : most populous, built on hills and right on the seashore.

Rescue operations are going on with Surf aid, Island Aid, the UN-OCHA and, more or less, CathaySeas trying to gather information and coordinate the works.
See: www.CathaySeas.com > Rescue.
[URGENT NOTE :] We are trying to list foreign victims that may be helped by their own embassies.

Padang today can be reached only by air, as roads and bridges are down.
Several surfers are buried alive in collapsed hotels with Search and rescue teams doing their best to save 'em all.
The local population is badly hit, and must arrange to live outdoors under heavy rains. Water-borne diseases can be expected.

Indeed, the lessons of the past have been well learned. Since the great tsunami of 2004, the quakes of Nias and Yogyakarta the indonesian authorities are MUCH more efficient in emergency management.

Everyone should be aware, thought, that Indonesia is the place on Earth where earthquakes are the most frequent and the most lethal.
Living there is not about having fear, it's about being informed and prepared.

Now that you have read me to the end, you may act and give some money to the NGO's on site...
Do it.
Now.

Sincerely yours,
- Yannick.
