Quad question? - 2009/03/31 01:38Have a new custom shaped EPS/Epoxy winged, swallow tailed Quad.
9'0" x 23" x 18" x 15" x 3".
Concave nose, double concave tail with 5 fin slots "Swiss Army Knife" approach.
Review:
Have ridden in larger surf with Quad set up:
2 x 4.6" Outside Future fins 2 x 4" Inside Future fins
Fast and tracks through sections on rails, very stable platform but turns are arc's and very stiff.
Ridden in average surf with:
2 x 4.6" Outside Future fins
1 x 6" Center.
Very stable but still very stiff.
Ridden in average surf with:
2 x 4.6" outside Future
1 x 4" Center
Seems best all around so far!
Ridden in small surf with:
2 x 4.6" outside Future fins.
1 x 3.25" Center trailer.
Now its getting loose but I think only good for small waves.
Question:
Anyone ridden one something similar with:
2 x 3.25" Outside Future fins.
1 x 7.5" Center?

Re:Quad question? - 2009/04/01 00:54hi DrC, i haven't done the quad thing with a mal yet, sounds rad. i have a newish 9'2" McTavish HP which has a fair bit of rocker and i've ridden it, and a similar board before it, with a home-made 9" cutaway set all the way back in the box along with various FCS fins in place as side bites. the cutaway is a special i made from a very nice old glass dolphin. i cut-out almost a full third from the base (above the section which sits in the box), taking out most of the traction area, leaving only a foiled shaft of glass between the box and the fin. it's way too loose by itself, even in a sweet old 5'10" pin tail, but, with standard FCS mal side bites in, it seems to hold the mal ok for nose riding in small waves and feels secure on a bigger face with bigger fins in as side bites. i used it once in good clean waves with FCS GAM in as side bites and ripped. point is, maybe a cutaway is worth a go in the tail of your board, it shouldn't be too stiff with smallish fins in the sides and will have a bit of suck for nose riding.

Re:Quad question? - 2009/04/01 07:20Yeah have a buddy who make's wooden fins and as I don't think Future makes a (Trailer) fin as big as 7.5" to fit in the slot I might have him make a nice Blonde wood fin.
This shot was taken this morning (from a distance) inside the breakwater at low tide. Was riding with the 2 X 4.6" and single 4" trailer. The 4" is actually one of the inside quad fins and is slightly foiled however usually you can not tell the difference. This morning however it was fast enough to make the fin hum.
You can see how much you can lay the rail in with this hybrid versus a regular longboard.

Re:Quad question? - 2009/04/02 03:53 Great let me know what you think! Can help you with fin combo's ... I have tried just about everything? They take a while to get used to, you have to turn further back on the tail like a shortboard. I use a lot of rotation in my turns (see photo) which will not work with a quad so still getting used to it.

Re:Quad question? - 2009/04/27 00:39DRC,
As promised some pics of my new board and my other board with a quad setup.
The board on the right is the new board.
