Brasilian Eco Board !
This month, Wannasurf presents an interview of Mario Ferminio, a Brasilain shaper that makes recyclable epoxy surfboards.
Wannasurf: Hello Mario, could
you tell us how you began to make surfboards?
Mario: I started doing
surf boards in 1985, of polyurethane. In middle of 1989 I went to France, where
I met the owners of the factory of surf boards Project Surf board. In the time
they dominated every technique of epóxi, I became friend of them and for three
months I had worked and learned all about epóxi.

WS: When did you start
to think about a new material for surfboard?
MF: When I came back
to Brazil I saw the market of polyurethane very restrict, so was that time that
I decided to get in this type of board and abandon the boards made of
polyurethane. Many problems came along and I decided to go back again to France
in the next years, to solve all the doubts.Three months before the close of Clark
Foam, I was decided stop doing boards, I had a big knowledge about epóxi,
almost 10.000 surf boards manufactured, and 10.000 surf boards knew all the
mistakes and hits of each board. In front of the ambient problems that affect
our planet, we thought to build a factory of surf boards that generates the
least garbage as possible, and the garbage produced had to have an ecologic
destiny.
WS: Is that much more
difficult to make recyclable surfboard?
MF: We look to
conscience the people that work with us to adopt this new posture. his claimed
comprehension and dedication of the entire person that was involved in the
process, because we should work with a short limit of mistake. Many attitudes
went prepared, like the separation of all garbage of the fabrication,
capitation of the dust of the sandpaper, installation of a station of treatment
of water. But my worry was to give an ecologic end in the boards also, because
when it breaks or it stays old, it becomes in garbage.I developed a study with
a company that already used the same material of its block, to do a new
product. But what I really wanted was to recycle me boards and I achieved to
find a way to recycle not only the block, but the lamination also, using in the
fabrication of another board. I’m improving the fabrication of boards without
stringer, I mean, without destruction of trees.
WS: And what are your
projects for the next few years?
MF: After two years,
we continue on fighting to contribute with preservation of the environment.
Because of this, we decided to diffuse our idea of an ecologic factory and the
importance about recycle the boards. In the month of september of 2007 we
elaborated an ecologic manifest while the championship WCT in France. The Tops
of ASP, like the high formers of opinions could engage themselves in the
project. We didn’t know if this manifest attended our goals, but for sure, we
will keeping on fighting to not only the apprentice of surf could wish a
cleaner planet, but all the interested in living harmonious and peacefully with
the nature.
