My Surf Profile

Surfing Since: 1969
Stance: Regular
Boards I surf: Shortboard / Thruster; Longboard; Single / Retro
Surf Experience: Respect! (20+ yrs)
Surf Level: All Conditions Surfer
Surf Frequency: Once or twice a month
Local Spots: Long Beach Island, Ocean City, Strathmere
Favourites Spots: LBI
My Biggest Wave: Double Overhead
Prefered Wave Size: Overhead
Favourite Type of Spot: Beach Break
My Best Ever Session: #1: Oct 3, 2000..24th St, Surf City, LBI NJ. Classic autumn long period north swell, stand up tubes, all lefts. Had my singlefin 50/50 longboard, and was just holding the edge on the drops. As soon as you made the drop you were tubed. #2:Cape Hatteras, NC...2004...Kept getting bigger and bigger, stiff offshore wind, killer drops on a SHALLOW bar.
Biggest Fear or Wipe out: Pile-driving into the bottom and doing a Christopher Reeve. I'd be happy to discuss drowning, but we don't talk about sharks.
Favourite Surfers: The guys I went to kindergarten with, surfed our way through high school, and STILL surf together whenever there are waves.

My Quiver

All about my boards !
Board 1
Shape: Longboard
Fins: 3- Thrusther
Size x Width x Thickness: 9'1"
Condition: Still Sexy
Make and Technology: McTavish Original triple rocker hi-performance in Surf Tech.
Tail: round
Bottom: Concave; Channels
Type of Fins: FU 8" cutaway, McTavish sidebites
Year Bought: 2006
My Opinion About: This board rocks! Triple rocker allows the front 1/3 out of the water when riding near the back- effectively turning it into a 6 foot longboard. This board is light and really kicks around.

Board 2
Shape: Longboard
Fins: 3- Thrusther
Size x Width x Thickness: 9' 6"
Condition: Showing its age
Make and Technology: Robert August- Mike Doyle Classic Waterman.
Tail: squash
Bottom: Concave
Rails, Specifics: 50/50 and soft
Year Bought: 2000
My Opinion About: Great board for small days- noserides really well. Glass job BIG disappointment.

Board 3
Shape: Shortboard
Fins: 3- Thrusther
Condition: Still Sexy
Make and Technology: RonJon thruster fun shape. Never fell in love w/this board.
Tail: squash
Bottom: Flat
Year Bought: 1998
My Opinion About: Never in love with this board either.

Board 4
Shape: Retro / Single
Size x Width x Thickness: 7'4"

Tail: pintail
Type of Fins: 70's style that I cut and re-shaped
Rails, Specifics: Thick shoulders, hard rails from the hips through the tail
My Opinion About: The only board I've kept for over 30 years. Got me through everything over the years. Big wave configuration

About Me

About me:

Life is about balance.  At age 53, I manage a career, wife, kids, mortgage, dog- the whole thing. Most importantly I have fun, and rarely compromise the balance.  It's incredibly important not to lose your dream.  So many of my contemporaries have dropped out and not left time in their lives for the things they used to love.  Not me!  I remain the Alpha Male Warrior!

So I surf when there are waves (30X/year), ski when I can. Hunt and fish before and after work.  I love my wife and include my family in all my activities (so we have six fly rods, five spinning rods, five pairs of waders, five surfboards, four surf rods, two snowboards, two pairs of skis, a mountain bike, two bows and guns to go around).

Advice to you kids when you get older: In order to effectively facilitate the continuation of your most fun outdoor activities, GET YOU SPOUSE AND KIDS IN ON IT! Then your spouse won't complain that you are out all the time, and your kids will get turned on to all the stuff that you love. Don't ever do anything to compromise your spousal relationship, and you will have TRUST (so when you go on trips with your surf buddies there will be no anomosity).  ALWAYS STAY IN BETTER PHYSICAL CONDITION THAN YOUR KIDS, so they won't call you "old man", and you can laugh at them when you're catching waves and they are getting crushed inside. Always challenge them to pushup contests, but wisely concede to bench press challenges. Don't even think about arm wrestling(not because they can actually win, but they tend to outlast you).

Favorite quotes:

"I like pigs. Dogs look up to us, cats look down on us.  Pigs treat us as equals". --Sir Winston Churchill

"You can get a lot further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word".-- Al Capone in The Untouchables movie (1987)

"The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead.  The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse.  All war depends upon it."-- Lt. Ronald Spiers in Band of Brothers

"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.  But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years." --Mark twain

"Buy the ticket, take the ride."--Hunter S. Thompson

"If I can get out, I'll surf it."--A. Salty Dog

"There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge."--Hunter S. Thompson, from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." --General George Patton Jr.
